HISTORY

Since 1693, the family has owned by the Staufenberg Castle and its surrounding lands. In 1802 the extensive vineyards of the former Salem monastery were added. History attests to the influence of the Margraves of Baden on Baden winegrowing, perhaps most importantly through the house's innovative approach to quality standards over the centuries. Christoph Markgraf von Baden's original winegrowing law of 1495 was only the first step in this process. Carl Friedrich Margrave of Baden, later the Grand Duke, established further standards for quality winegrowing in Baden in 1782 by planting pure Riesling vines for the first time in the "Klingelberg" site. This created the legendary "Klingelberger," now a symbol for the unique Riesling tradition in the Ortenau.

TERROIR

As the name suggests, the vineyards are located in Baden, the warmest and most sunny region in Germany. In order to make the best possible use of the above-average solar radiation compared to other regions, our vineyards are orientated to the south where possible. In addition, the best quality grapes are located on steep slopes, which considerably increases the effect of solar radiation. Another important factor is the adequate supply of rainfall, which is guaranteed both in the Ortenau region by the Schwarzwaldrand and Lake Constance.

It is no coincidence that the terroirs of our winery, the geological and climatic conditions on Lake Constance and in the Ortenau, are like many quality wineries in the French Burgundy . To convert these exquisite natural conditions into authentic wine of excellent quality and to preserve them, remains our most important task - today and also in the future.
