John Belsham founded Foxes Island in 1992 to focus on exquisitely made, regionally expressive wines; exactly what he had learned to do in France. he initially made the wines for foxes island from his Rapaura vineyard on the Wairau plains and produced the very first foxes island wine: chardonnay, vintage 1992. 24 years on, Belsham’s passion for producing exceptional wines has yet to wane; limited in production and genuinely hand crafted, all the wines hold pride of place at the fox house.

A relatively cool but even growing season, the grapes enjoyed a long hang time and were beautifully ripe with concentrated flavors. Hand harvested around 23°Brix, the fruit was chilled, whole bunch pressed and held in tank overnight. The juice was then transferred to a combination of large French oak barrels for natural fermentation by indigenous yeast. Fermentation took 11 months to complete. The resulting wine was then bottled & cellared for 3 years prior to release.

Decidedly focused and finely textured, the 2010 Riesling reflects the stony soils in which it grows. Aromas of orange blossom and ripe nectarine fill the glass whilst flavors of white peach, Tahitian lime and warm wet stone are accented with a hint of fennel.
