John Belsham founded Foxes Island in 1992 to focus on exquisitely made, regionally expressive wines; exactly what he had learned to do in France. he initially made the wines for foxes island from his Rapaura vineyard on the Wairau plains and produced the very first foxes island wine: chardonnay, vintage 1992. 24 years on, Belsham’s passion for producing exceptional wines has yet to wane; limited in production and genuinely hand crafted, all the wines hold pride of place at the fox house.
Country: New Zealand
Region: Awatere Valley
100 % Pinot Noir
Harvested between 23.5 and 25.5°brix, the fruit was hand-picked and cooled to 4°c. Following de-stemming and an extended cold maceration, the must was warmed and fermented in small open-topped oak and stainless vessels. At dryness, the wine was drained and the skins gently pressed following which the individual batches were matured in tight-grained French oak barrels for 10 months.
This wine is beautifully presented as the vines positively respond to natural farming methods and gain maturity. The best vines are hand tended and the selected fruit is naturally vinified by indigenous yeast in oak cuves. Matured in small, French oak barrels, the best components are selected for the final blend.
